    Mary Lee Cofield

    December 24, 1942 - September 23, 2014

Mary Lee Saunders Cofield was born on December 24, 1942 to Frances Harrell Jackson and Jessie Saunders of Ahoskie, NC. Mary departed her earthly tabernacle on September 23, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC after a courageous battle. Mary Lee completed her education at R. L. Vann where Mary Lee was a majorette and played basketball. Mary Lee was a very proud Trojan and looked forward to attending her high school reunions and seeing all of her friends. Mary Lee was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church most of her life and when Mary Lee returned home she also returned to her roots at Calvary. Mary Lee married Cleveland Giddings and to this union two children were born; Gregory Giddings and Landa Giddings Freeman. Mary Lee moved to New York and worked at the hospital to support her family. Mary Lee later relocated to Virginia and married Leon Cofield. Mary Lee worked very hard to care for her family until she could no longer work and Mary Lee then dedicated her time to giving back to the community by volunteering at her church’s food bank and helping her friends and family in any way possible. Mary Lee joined Taylorsville Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA to continue serving the Lord. Mary Lee returned to her hometown of Ahoskie in 2010. Mary Lee spent her days showering her family and friends with love and support, cooking delicious meals and cakes, playing bingo or cards with her girlfriends; Joyce B., Joyce S. and Shirley, and watching football; especially the Dallas Cowboys. Mary Lee’s sense of humor and fun loving spirit is what is often reflected upon and she is everyone’s favorite lady! Mary Lee leaves to cherish her memory two children: Gregory Giddings and Landa Freeman; seven grandchildren: Donald Giddings, Cedric Giddings, April Freeman, Raymond Giddings, Ryan Giddings, Courtney Freeman, and Breyanna Askew and two adopted grandchildren: Andrea Jerue and Savion White. Mary Lee leaves behind four great grandchildren: Adrian Giddings, JahNaysia Freeman, Ahmir Giddings, and Aiden Giddings. Mary Lee leaves behind two sisters: Shirley Saunders King (Forrest) and Altonette Jackson; one brother: Alton Jackson; three nieces: Michelle Saunders, Monica Harrell, and Bridget Harrell and two nephews Darius King and Marcus Lewter. Mary Lee leaves behind two aunts: Eunice Bailey and Rosa Lee Harrell. Mary Lee also leaves to cherish her memory two cousins: Waymond Mitchell and Depriest Mitchell who were raised with Mary Lee; two step grandchildren, Savion White of Virginia Beach, VA and Andrea Selfridge of Chesapeake, VA. Mary Lee was preceded in death by her parents, an aunt; Willie Mae Rogers whom Mary Lee spent a great deal of her life with, and one brother William Harrell affectionately known as Moonie. Mary Lee will be missed by a host of cousins and friends.
