Winfred Hardy Jr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Winfred Hardy, Jr. (79), was born in Hertford County to the late Winfred Hardy, Sr. and Lula Harrell Hardy on August 5, 1937. He entered into eternal rest on October 31, 2016 at Three Rivers Habilitation Center in Windsor, NC. "Sheriff" as he was still affectionately called by many in the community, received his early education at Robert L.Vann in Ahoskie, NC. After High School he furthered his education at Roanoke Chowan Technical College, N.C. Department of Justice, Wilson Technical College and N.C. Justice Academy. He was employed by the Ahoskie Police Department for over 20 years, serving as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and acting Chief for the Town of Ahoskie until a new chief was chosen. In 1986, he decided to run for Sheriff of Hertford County, making history as the first elected Black Sheriff of Hertford County. Sheriff Hardy served two full terms but decided to retire December 31,1997, a year short of the completion of his third term. Sheriff Hardy was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and past chairman of the board of Trustees. He served as past member of the Board of Directors at Roanoke Chowan Community College and ABC Board, member of the National Sheriff Association, member of the North Carolina Sheriff Association and past member of the Ahoskie Town Council. Sheriff Hardy leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 62 years Elenia Vinson Hardy; his five children, one daughter, Cynthia Hardy Riddick (Robert); four sons, Michael Eric Hardy (Loretta), Randy Owen Hardy (Denise) all of Ahoskie, NC, Timothy O' Neal Hardy (Sandra) of Windsor, NC., and Terence Lynn Hardy of Goldsboro, NC.; a grandson he raised, Anthony Garry Hardy (Amanda) of Sanford, NC.; one sister, Ruth Hardy Fennell of Ahoskie, NC; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren; two adopted sons, Johnny Lassiter and Rev. David Robertson and a host of other relatives and friends.
