Patricia Simmons Freeman

Patricia Simmons Freeman was born in Ahoskie, North Carolina on July 19th of 1959. She is the eldest child to her parents; Mrs. Deborah Pope Simmons and the late Alvester Simmons, Sr. She spent her childhood in Ahoskie, North Carolina. The family owned community grocery store of more than 30 years provided her with an environment to develop a strong sense of community and hard work. At a young age, Patricia became a faithful life time member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Her spiritual development was nurtured and sustained by all who shared her love for Jesus. Patricia was educated in the Hertford County Public School System. Patricia’s passion for learning and serving others lead her to North Carolina Central University, where she received a Bachelors Degree of Nursing in 1981. Patricia continued her love of learning and serving others while working at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. She worked in the health care field in Washington D.C., Charter-Westbrook Behavioral Health, Richmond, Virginia for 10 years in various capacities and Medical Facilities of America, Bowling Green, Virginia for 2 years as unit supervisor. She worked at Medicorp/Mary Washington Health Care at the Snowden facility as a Manager, Charge Nurse and Supervisor for 14 years. Patricia met her husband Lenwood Freeman Jr., in Caroline County, Virginia. They became instant soul mates and shortly thereafter married. Their loving relationship lasted for more than 25 years... She was passionate about spending time with her family, traveling, and supporting Native American events, Pow Wows held on the East Coast of the United States. Patricia was a member of the Meherrin Indian Tribe of Winton, NC. In the twilight of her young life, she continued to serve as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and a listed nurse and youth tutor at St. John Baptist Church, Milford, VA. She was also an active member of the American Nurse’s Association and Virginia Nurse’s Society. Patricia leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Lenwood, mother, Deborah Simmons (Vernon Harrell), Ahoskie, North Carolina, sister, Lisa Mikell (Johnny) Providence Forge, VA, brother, Alvester Simmons, Jr. (Lynn), Ahoskie, North Carolina, Sister-in-law, Helen M. Freeman, Esq., Bethesda, Maryland, brother-in-law, Willard Otis Freeman (Evelyn) Bethesda, Maryland. Niece and Nephews: Jessica Beacham (Caleb), Kyle Simmons, Justin and Aaron Mikell, Shields W. Riggs, Jr., Willard O. Freeman, II., and a host of family and friends.
